The most important item of business at the AGM will be elections for the CMLA’s Board of Directors (the “Board”). Accordingly, the CMLA is actively recruiting dynamic candidates passionate about organizing Canadian Muslim lawyers and nurturing the growth of the Canadian Muslim legal community. The deadline to submit nominations is February 23, 2017.
The Board is the governing body of the CMLA and oversees all of the work undertaken by the CMLA and its committees, including the Legal Advocacy Committee and regional chapters. It is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization, including organizing events and maintaining the CMLA’s digital media presence. It also coordinates the CMLA’s representation on external bodies such as the Roundtable of Diversity Associations and develops and maintains strategic relationships with other community organizations within the Canadian Muslim community and beyond. Finally, the Board is responsible for shaping the long-term strategic positioning of the organization.
Candidates that are interested in Canadian justice issues and the interplay between these justice issues and the Canadian Muslim community and other minority communities will find meaning in serving on the CMLA’s Board. Candidates should be able to articulate their vision for the potential that the CMLA holds and what they expect to contribute to the organization.
The expected time commitment varies considerably on a month-to-month basis. On average, 10 to 20 hours per month is expected for each member of the Board. Notwithstanding this significant commitment, candidates should be assured that each member of the Board typically maintains a busy law practice and personal life and it is understood that professional and family commitments generally take precedence.
Successful candidates who remain highly engaged can look forward to enhancing their leadership skills, developing an understanding of non-profit governance and developing a deep network of productive relationships.
