Last week, the CMLA received information regarding concerning content in a mandatory Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (“EDI”) Course at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law.
The Course relies on dangerous tropes and misleading interpretations of Islamic texts, both of which misrepresent Islam in a manner that reinforces negative stereotypes and promotes prejudice against Muslims.
The Course incorporates harmful stereotypes about Muslims, such as conflating Islam with extremism or casting Muslim communities as inherently threatening
CMLA has written to the Dean and supports the students' call for action:
A public apology by Dean Brunnée and the school's administration
A retraction of the course
A commitment to consulting with the MLSA and other affinity groups on any EDI material that applies to specific demographics at the law school
We look forward to a prompt response from the Dean and meaningful steps to rectify this issue.
