The Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association (CMLA), a Toronto-based not-for-profit association of Muslim lawyers, is seeking a part-time Program Coordinator for its “Muslim Legal Support Centre” (MLSC) project.
The Program Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of the MLSC and ensuring the quality and integrity of the services delivered by the MLSC across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
The MLSC is a project that aims to connect a diverse cross-section of the Muslim community in the GTA with culturally appropriate and accessible legal services, including legal education workshops, summary advice and referrals. The project is supported through funding provided by the Law Foundation of Ontario.
Job Summary:
As Program Coordinator, you will be responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of the MLSC under the direction and supervision of the CMLA Board of Directors. This includes coordination and outreach, as follows:
Coordinate all legal advice activities of the MLSC, including intakes, outtakes, follow-up, referral requests, and maintaining a roster of volunteer lawyers.
Organize public legal education (PLE) sessions for community members, including speakers, platform/location, promotions, follow-up, and resulting referral requests.
Conduct outreach to other equity-seeking or community organizations to build goodwill and explore potential partnerships.
Create compelling content for social media including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, including promotional and educational materials.
Serve as a media liaison for media inquiries, partnerships and collaborations with other organizations and businesses.
The position may require the successful candidate to travel across the GTA if health guidelines allow for such activity
Salary and Time Frame:
The Program Coordinator will be paid $20 per hour as per our grant guidelines
The Program Coordinator will work approximately 15 - 20 hours a week.
The position is a one-year contract position starting immediately
Experience and Skills
An understanding of the legal issues and/or access to justice challenges facing Ontario’s Muslim community, including systemic racism stemming from anti-Black racism and Islamophobia.
A strong understanding of, and commitment to, anti-oppression principles and an awareness of the various intersections of social identities.
Relevant experience working with Muslim communities in the GTA.
Demonstrated experience in coordinating community-based projects/events.
Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with community agencies, lawyers and community groups.
Strong interpersonal, communication, written and outreach skills.
Clear and methodical approach to work and strong organizational skills.
Knowledge and use of social media and virtual platforms - creating content using Canva or similar platform, and using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Zoom.
Experience conducting legal intakes would be an asset.
Proficiency in at least one language spoken in the Muslim community (e.g. Arabic, Somali, Swahili, Urdu, Farsi etc.) is an asset.
Flexible approach to work in order to accommodate stakeholder meetings, events, functions, and work activities.
