Statement Regarding Concerns with Recent Developments of the EDI Curriculum at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law.

This past week, we met with students and faculty from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law regarding a mandatory Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (“EDI”) Course that was assigned to students.

Following the Faculty’s meeting with the CMLA (as well as other groups, including the National Council of Canadian Muslims), we were relieved to hear that the curriculum has recently been temporarily paused as the faculty reviews its approach and content.

However, we remain deeply concerned that the university has not yet specifically acknowledged the Islamophobic nature of the curriculum. This course contained harmful, Islamophobic statements that perpetuate dangerous stereotypes—something that has no place in an EDI initiative. NCCM has put out a sample letter that can be signed (link in bio)

We urge the administration to conduct an investigation and strongly recommend that the university immediately organize a seminar on Islamophobia for students to begin addressing the harm caused.

The dean has offered to consult with student groups and community organizations on the design and delivery of learning opportunities that further inclusion and belonging at the Faculty of Law going forward. We will continue to engage on this topic to ensure all curriculum remains free of discrimination and bias, and that it fosters an environment of true inclusivity, respect, and understanding for all students.
